Selling the American Dream, One Beer at a Time

The American dream was represented with the healthy, muscular man being shown in

work attire, at the gym, and dining with his beautiful, well-coifed wife and friendly

associate. Blatz Beer is the finishing touch, completing his well-rounded life.

Good Girls Sell

The women portrayed in the print advertising of the 1950s were modestly clothed in

stylish everyday dresses. Selling women as sex objects was not often utilized by

advertising agencies in this era. The models featured represent the looks popular in

America at this time: slim, beautiful , wholesome, and very Doris Day all-American .

  1. i think with the advertisement of the day most of them have the whole family in them. back in the day the rules were not as strict as they are today, which would be a surprise if younger people were in advertisements. also it can been seen that it was aimed at on class of people then what is aimed at today. its a great post to see how things were done back in the day

  2. The advertisement that good girls sells has changed drastically over time. Today, bad girls sell more than good girls to a certain extent. For example, girls who are willing to take off their clothes will get the part in the video than the girl who sticks to her values and keep her clothes on.

  3. Wow! What a difference between the fifties and sixties in thinking. Girls weren't used for sex, you're right. They were portrayed much more modestly, and so were men. It was a better time. We have been on the decline ever since. I like the picture of the wife giving the husband a beer. He's sitting watching TV after a hard day of work and she's doing the dishes with her fifties woman apron on. It's so cliche of the time, and very sexist that men and women were "supposedly" a certain way and did only certain things.

  4. These old ads will make someone think about the past. The thoughts and ideas of people at the time were different then compared to today. Sex and alcohol are still very influential today, yet during the years of the ad publishing, to speak and promote such images was very controversial.

  5. These ads, even though they were made way before I was born, make me think that the 50s were a much better time then that of today by far.

  6. Back in the day, advertisements for beer were gear toward the everyday man and how they can be rich and extravagant. Not now a days where they are point to a normal guy having fun. Ads have changed a lot. of course the advertisement includes a blonde and displays an ad for sex.
