What Influences a Drink Order

What influences a drink order?

Cosmopolitans, a type of martini, became popular in the 1990s, due to the incredible popularity of the HBO series, Sex and the City. Women from all over America were enthralled with the exciting, fast paced, sexy lives of
every woman, author, Carrie Bradshaw; WASP Charlotte York; successful lawyer, Miranda Hobbes; and enticing owner of a public relations firm, Samantha Jones. The show focussed on the quartets amazing lives. Their never mundane days and their wild nights packed with club openings and dinner at the restaurant of the month.

While middle American soccer moms may have felt whisked away every Sunday night, they were definitely not living the sexy urban lifestyle portrayed by these fabulous career gals. New Manolo Blahniks and the "it" bag may have been out of reach for most viewers, though a twelve dollar cocktail was most likely in the budget. Hence, the wild popularity of this pretty, pink, sweet, vodka based martini called, the Cosmopolitan.

Cosmopolitan
- 1 1/2 oz vodka
- 1 oz cranberry juice
- 1/4 oz Cointreau
- splash of fresh lime juice
Garnish: Lime wedge

Mix all ingredients in a cocktail shaker with ice. Strain into a chilled martini glass. Garnish with a lime

The Cosmopolitan is a fruity beverage made even more feminine by the pink hue. The ingredients are vodka, cranberry juice, Cointreau, and lime juice. Variations include triple sec in exchange for Cointreau and increasing the amount of lime juice from a splash to a quarter ounce. A lime wedge is generally placed on the rim as a garnish.

  1. Interesting post on what influence a drink. It has alot to do with what kind of culture, time, and space. Drinks reflect what kind of culture we are at a certain time and how much space is going to taken up in the glass by the drink. I have a book with 10,000 from the past 50 years from different parts of the US. Many names reflect on what was going on a the time. Many classics drink that people normally order have been around for a long time. I am bartender and when I go to a bar I am the only one who influences my drinks.
